Best Time of Year to Move in the Seattle Area

There’s no single “correct” month to move, but the Pacific Northwest’s weather and the general moving-industry calendar both push toward the same answer: late spring through early fall is the easiest window, if you have the flexibility to choose.

Summer (June–September): the easiest window, also the busiest

Seattle’s dry season is real and reliable — long stretches of clear, mild weather from roughly June through September, after the spring rain lets up and before it returns in the fall. That makes loading a truck, carrying furniture across a lawn, or leaving boxes on a driveway overnight far less risky than doing the same thing in February.

The tradeoff is that everyone else wants the same weather. Summer, especially the stretch around the end of each month, is the busiest season for movers nationally — driven by leases turning over and families trying to move before the school year starts. If your date is flexible, booking early and avoiding the very last weekend of the month gives you more scheduling options and often a better rate.

Fall and spring: good weather odds, fewer competing bookings

Late spring (May) and early fall (September–October, before the rain really sets in) often get you similar dry-weather odds to summer with less competition for moving dates. Worth considering if your move date isn’t tied to a lease or school calendar.

Winter: doable, just plan around the rain — and the pass

Winter moves happen constantly here and aren’t a problem, but a few things are worth planning for:

• Rain protection. Floors get wet fast with repeated trips in and out — we lay down floor protection and use furniture pads/shrink wrap more heavily in the wet months.
• Shorter daylight. Loading and unloading both take longer to plan around a 4:30pm sunset.
• Snoqualmie Pass. If your move involves I-90 over the pass — anything east of North Bend, or a move connecting to Eastern Washington — winter storms can mean chain requirements or closures. Worth building in a flexible date if that’s part of your route.

The one date to avoid if you can help it

Whatever season, the last two or three days of the month are the single busiest stretch for any moving company — that’s when most leases turn over. If your move date has any flexibility at all, a weekday in the middle of the month is usually easier to book and less rushed.

Tip: If you’re choosing between two open dates, take the earlier one. Booking further ahead of a busy weekend or month-end almost always gives you more say over the actual time slot, not just the day.
